Building Permit Requirements

A building permit is required prior to starting work on the interior or exterior of any building. Applications are available from the Public Services Department, 33720 W. Nine Mile Road. The following is a partial list of projects that require a building permit:

Adding space to the building
Electrical repairs or improvements
Plumbing repairs or improvements
Heating and air conditioning repairs or improvements
Signs - installation, repair, or maintenance
Fencing installation or improvement
Roofing installation or replacement
Structural repairs or improvements
Sprinkler installation - fire or lawn
Awning or canopy installation
Window installation or replacement
Exterior siding and trim - installation, replacement or improvement
Decks and sheds - installation, replacement or improvement
Garages, attached or detached-installation replacement or improvement
Basement finishing or improvement
Replacement of more than 50 ft of city sidewalk

Permits are not required for the following:

Painting
Insulation
Basement waterproofing (except structural rebuilding )
Minor maintenance and repair valued at less than $200

The construction, alteration, addition, or modification of the exterior of any building in any zoning district, except single family, requires site plan approval by the City Planning Commission prior to application for a building permit. Applications are available in the City Manager's Office.

Construction is prohibited on Sundays, and other days, except between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., unless a special permit for such is first obtained from the City Manager.

Also, the painting of addresses on curbs is prohibited.
