April 30, 2012 - City Hosts Millennial Mixer for Young Leaders on May 24
The Cities of Farmington Hills and Farmington will host a
Millennial Mixer on Thursday, May 24 from 7:00pm to 9:30pm in the
Council Chambers at Farmington Hills City Hall, located at 31555
Eleven Mile Road. The free networking event for 21 to 35-year-old
residents of Farmington Hills and Farmington will feature keynote
speaker Dan Gilmartin, Executive Director and CEO of the Michigan
Municipal League.
The Cities are hosting the forum in partnership
with the Millennial Mayors Congress (MMC), an alliance of city
officials and rising leaders working together to address regional
challenges in metro Detroit. Established in 2009, the group
represents a broad network of young people who work in cities,
nonprofits, businesses, and universities all across metro Detroit.
The Millennial Mixer will give young leaders a chance to have a voice in local government and offer their input to city officials. Attendees will have the opportunity to network and discuss relevant topics based on the MMC’s Millennial Vision for Metro Detroit. Discussion topics will include the economy, vibrant places, transportation, education, government, and the environment.
Farmington Hills and Farmington were founding members of the Millennial Mayors Congress and have an active interest in involving Millennials in decisions impacting the region. “We want to engage the next generation of leaders and get their input,” said Farmington Hills Mayor Barry Brickner. “I look forward to the open sharing of ideas and visions for the future.”
The Millennial Mixer will offer beer, wine, and small plates-style appetizers served in the City Hall Gallery. January 31, 2012 - Earth-Friendly Home Landscapes with Compost: Water Quality Tips for Spring
Runoff
from home lawns, gardens and driveways may carry pollutants into
storm drains which connect to the Rouge River. Loose soil and mulch
are particular concerns during heavy spring rains.
Healthy soil with adequate organic matter in the soil is the first step. Healthy soils encourage healthy plant roots which hold soil in place (see diagram below). Homeowner choices for enhancing organic matter include: mowing leaves into the lawn; adding compost; recycling grass clippings in the lawn and garden; using natural mulches in flower beds; and digging in compost into garden beds. For a short how-to-do-it video, see "Why Not Turn Over a New (Old) Leaf" at www.socwa.org.
To test your soil for pH, basic nutrients, and organic matter, purchase an MSU soil test box from a participating retailer (April 2 - May 1, 2012). If you are using fertilizer in any quantity, a soil test of the area should be done every three years. For a list of garden centers participating in "Don't Guess...Soil Test!", go to: www.socwa.org.
To learn more about earth-friendly lawns, sign up for the public
seminar sponsored by SOCWA:
Monday, March 19, 2012; 6:45 - 8:00
pm, Bloomfield Township Library. Free!
The basics of mowing, fertilizing and watering with the Rouge River in mind will be covered. E-mail LFDean@aol.com to register or check www.socwa.org for the program flyer.
The SOCWA Master Composter course trains citizens to be part of an areawide education program. Classes begin Monday, March 12 at the Bloomfield Township Library. Both experienced and novice gardeners are invited.

October 27, 2011 - Farmington Public Safety Department Looking For Trick or Treaters on Halloween
Two members of the Farmington Public Safety Department will be
out on Halloween, patrolling Farmington neighborhoods to find trick
or treaters. They will be handing out bags with Halloween surprises.
The Farmington Public Safety Department started this program
eighteen years ago and believes that it is a good way for children
to have a positive first impression of police officers.
Pictured are daughters of Commander Ted Warthman; twins Hope and Hayden (4), and Halle (7). They have their bags filled with potato chips, a coloring book and other surprises. Busch’s Fresh Food Market, located on Drake Road in Farmington Hills, and Better Made donated bags of potato chips for the Halloween bags. Halloween bags will be handed out beginning 6:00 p.m. on Halloween night. Look for them in the Farmington “Crime Prevention” SUV.
In addition to this program, the public safety department will have extra patrol in Farmington neighborhoods during the Halloween season
October 18, 2011 - Apartment Fire
On October 18, 2011, at about 12:30 p.m., the Farmington Public Safety Department responded to 36900 block of Jamestown on a report of light smoke coming from a second floor apartment. Public safety officers arrived and found light smoke in the common hallway and had to force entry into the second floor apartment. Upon the door opening, public safety officers were met with thick smoke and heat that forced them to the floor with zero visibility inside the apartment.
Public safety officers entered the apartment to search for the fire and possible occupants. Officers located the fire in a back bedroom and a female in her mid sixties on the floor. The victim was removed from the apartment and basic life support efforts were administered until Community Emergency Medical Service (CEMS) arrived and provided advanced life support. The victim was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.
Public safety officers were able to contain the fire to the victim’s apartment. The apartment suffered heavy fire and smoke damage. Residents from the remaining apartments in the building were allowed to return to their apartments.
Farmington Hills Fire Department was requested for mutual aid, but cancelled upon arrival as the fire was under control. Farmington public safety investigators are being assisted by Oakland County Fire Investigation Unit to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
For further information, contact 248-474-4700.

Safety Department responded to the Charter One Bank, located at
23220 Farmington Road on a reported robbery. Officers learned that a
bank teller was approached by a suspect who implied they were armed
with a weapon and demanded money. The suspect obtained an
undisclosed amount of money from the bank teller and fled on foot.
Farmington Public Safety officers searched the area and were assisted by Farmington Hills Police Department K-9 unit. While searching the area, a wig, sunglasses, coat and bag were found in a nearby parking lot.
The suspect was described as a white female, 20 to 30 years old, 5’1” – 5’3” tall, medium build. The suspect was wearing a black hoodie (recovered), black sunglasses (recovered), black wig (recovered) and white shoes.

September 12, 2011 - City to Host Community Forum on Suicide Prevention September 21, 2011
Members of the community are encouraged to attend a Suicide Prevention forum on Wednesday, September 21 at Farmington Hills City Hall. The meeting will begin at 6:45 p.m. with refreshments and networking, and the program will run from 7:00pm to 8:30pm The forum is targeted at parents, youth (ages 12 to 18), teachers, the faith community, service club members, and anyone else who has regular contact with young people.
“The Epidemic of Suicide” program is designed to empower participants and show them how they can play a pivotal role in preventing this tragic occurrence. The recent alarming increase in suicide attempts seen by the Farmington Hills Police Department led the City Council to take action and bring the community together to find a solution.
“Nationally, suicide has reached epidemic proportions,” said Farmington Hills City Council Member Dr. Ken Massey. “Unfortunately a lot of people think it’s not their problem, but in reality it’s the entire community’s problem.” The topic is deeply personal to Dr. Massey and his wife Katherine, who lost their son Graham E. Smith to suicide in May of this year.
Featured speakers at the forum will include Eric Hipple, former Detroit Lion and current U-M Depression Center Outreach Coordinator, and Jeff Edwards, Chairman of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Both men lost their sons to suicide and now reach out to others to create an awareness of the disease of depression and its link to suicide.
“We want to bring community leaders together and show them how they can reach out to a troubled young person and offer them help,” said Dr. Massey. “We want to bring the topic ofdepression and suicide out into the open so that people will seek the help they need.”
The meeting is sponsored by the Farmington Area Suicide Prevention Task Force and the Graham E. Smith Memorial fund. For more information, call the City Manager’s Office at 248-871-2500.

April 27, 2011 - Don't Guess - Soil Test!
If your landscape or parks department is fertilizing ANY type of landscape, they should be basing the fertilizer nutrients on the result of a soil test. If the soil is healthy, with organic matter at 12% or above, some reduction in fertilizer quantities is recommended. Experience has shown that even 5% or more organic matter in the soil, combined with proper gardening practices and natural mulches, can also facilitate fertilizer use reduction, water quality protection, and cost savings.
SOCWA has supported Oakland County MSU Extension's "Don't Guess...Soil Test!" program this year by: (1) picking up soil tests in some SE Oakland stores; (2) providing citizen education through the Master Composter program and table displays; (3) posting the flyer on our website...plus printed copies; and (4) selling soil tests at our two healthy lawn care seminars. Wayne County MSU Extension is not participating this year, unfortunately. Newspaper and other publicity is being handled by Oakland MSU Extension.
The specially-priced MSU soil test package WITH ORGANIC MATTER INCLUDED is offered by most retailers ONLY during the month of April when free pickup of soil test samples is offered. The price is $19.00, and the results are e-mailed to the customer with specific recommendations. Soil testing and proper fertilization is only one of several key steps for making municipal landscapes "part of the solution to water pollution."
